It was developed over 5,000 years ago by the Yogis of India as a way to decrease body tension and create what they called a union between the body and the mind.
In laymen’s terms…
Yoga is a system of movement patterns to help you relax and be more present in your day to day life.
It came to the west during the 18th and 19th century, when yogis such as Swami Vivekananda began coming to spread the philosophy of yoga and teach people the movements.
Then during the counterculture of the 1960’s and 70’s yoga BLEW UP, becoming a popular practice among hippies and nature types.
In present time, yoga has changed to focus more exclusively on losing weight and reducing stress.
There are actually even scientific studies being done on how Yoga can help with diseases such as diabetes!
In June of 2015, in Interleukin-6, vitamin D & diabetes risk-factors modified by a short-term yoga-based lifestyle intervention in overweight/obese individuals, 34 obese people performed supervised yoga for 10 days.
After that, they were told to do those same exercises routinely at home for one month.
The results demonstrated that not only did the yoga help the participants lose weight, they also had a positive change in IL-6, an inflammatory cytokine, and Vitamin D!
Isn’t that amazing?!
It’s also been shown to help reduce blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, which will help with weight loss and healing!
There are MANY different kinds of yoga, and more and more just keep popping up…
So what are the BEST types of yoga that people have repeatedly been getting results with?
Literally meaning, “breath-synchronized movement”…
Vinyasa Yoga is type of yoga where you focus on syncing your inhales and exhales with your movements while flowing from one position to the next.
Lots of people have reported losing weight and feeling GREAT after one of these classes!
Also known as hot yoga, this is a type of yoga where you do exercises in a room that’s at 105°F or more!
You’ll definitely burn more calories and increase the rate at which you detox in one of these classes.
This is not one of classic yoga styles, but it has become super popular.
In one of these classes you’ll focus more on getting a workout than relaxing or developing flexibility.
If you’re the type who can’t stand the slow pace of the yoga classes you’ve been to, maybe this is a class for you.
If you’re looking to relax, this is the class for you.
Rather than a class like Vinyasa yoga, where you move quickly from position to position, this type of yoga is slooow.
You might hold poses for up to 3 minutes in some classes…
This sounds long, but you’ll barely notice because it feels sooo good.
But how does slow movement help with weight loss?
When you’re stressed, cortisol levels rise, which keeps body fat, especially belly fat on your body…
If you take the time to relax, you reduce your cortisol levels, and keep your body in more of a healing mode, so it has time to build muscle and burn fat.
This is a great type of yoga for mom’s looking to stay fit while they are pregnant.
Not only does this help moms physically, it also helps them stay emotionally calm during the stressful changes of having a new child.
