According to a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO), all processed meats along with red meat can lead to cancer.
The manufacturing process of hot dogs consists of mixing leftovers of pork, beef and chicken, which commonly include ‘edible’ animal by-products, such as animal feet and heads, fatty tissue and skins.
This mixture is then enriched with a number of additives, including high amounts of salt, corn syrup, nitrates, and other chemicals, most of which have been linked to cancer.
Moreover, the health hazards of hot dogs are the same as those of smoking according to organizations like the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
The most health hazardous additives in hot dogs are nitrates and nitrites, which bind with amines on high heat thus forming nitrosamines.
And most nitrosamines are carcinogenic. In fact, there’s mounting evidence that links these chemical compounds to:
- bladder cancer,
- colon cancer,
- stomach cancer, and
- pancreatic cancer.
Even consumption of one hot dog a day increases your risk of colorectal cancer by 21%, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Unfortunately, organic hot dogs also contain nitrite, sometimes even in higher quantities than traditional hot dogs.
