While many of the health benefits of pomegranates actually come from the seeds, the pomegranate itself as a whole is still very beneficial to your health. Pomegranates can help control several risk factors for disease such as your blood pressure and cholesterol and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s a deeper look at the health benefits of pomegranates.

It’s a Natural Aphrodisiac
Pomegranates have long been regarded as an aphrodisiac in many cultures and now it’s entering more common usage. A study out of the Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh showed that pure pomegranate juice could increase salivary testosterone levels and improve blood pressure and mood. An increase in testosterone leads to an increase in sexual desire. If you’re worried about erectile dysfunction then you should also be eating more pomegranate. It’s not been conclusively proved to work with humans but animal studies show that pomegranate improved blood flow and erectile response. It could work as a great natural impotence remedy for humans, but we don’t know for sure yet.


Reduces Arthritis and Joint Pain
Arthritis is caused by inflammation in the joints and it’s a problem that causes pain and stiffness that gets worse over time. Each year sees over 3 million cases of arthritis. Pomegranate is a great natural arthritis remedy because it is packed full of antioxidant flavonoids. These flavonoids help to eradicate inflammation and can ease joint pain, including arthritis, as a result. You should consult your doctor before eating pomegranates for arthritis if you’re already on arthritis medication though. Just to be safe.

Fights Cancer
Research is still being done but all the latest research suggests that pomegranates and pomegranate seeds belong on the list of natural cancer-fighting foods. Pomegranates have shown promising results when it comes to shrinking the tumors of several cancers. Pomegranates are particularly effective at fighting and protecting against breast cancer. They have been shown to stimulate the death of breast cancer cells and prevent them from spreading. They are also able to protect against prostate cancer and several other cancers.

Reduces Blood Pressure
Pomegranate juice contains several antioxidants and polyphenols that are able to keep your cardiovascular system healthy by reducing blood pressure. A Study from 2013 showed that drinking pomegranate juice has positive effects when it comes to hypertension (high blood pressure). Pomegranates have been shown to reduce blood pressure in people already suffering from hypertension; meaning you should start eating pomegranates now to prevent hypertension or treat the high blood pressure you already suffer with.

Improves Memory
Studies have shown that polyphenols, of which pomegranates have many, are great for the mid. It was shown to be particularly helpful at improving memory retention. One study had one group of people drink 8 ounces of pomegranate juice a day while the other control group had a placebo drink. Those drinking pomegranate juice had improved markers of both verbal and visual memory. Pomegranate has also been shown to prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, making it a great natural treatment for this debilitating disease.
